I think the problem was reinstalling oculus software without removing the device pairing settings. Well they still don't do it if I launch them directly from steam (still just show a desktop VR window) but if I launch steam VR from the air link library, and launch games from within steam VR, they are fine. Then add the headset in oculus software again, complete with new pairing code from the headset. Then power on headset and disable / re enable air link. It was even more puzzling since some of the games did work but others refused.įinally I tried something I hadn't seen suggested before: open oculus software on desktop with headset disconnected, and remove the device. I searched and tried everything - updated drivers, plugged in via USB, reinstalled steam VR, reinstalled games, changed between Oculus and SteamVR as default OpenXR runtime, manually added steam games to oculus library and launched from there, etc. Since then, I could still air link in fine, open steam etc but when I launched an actual game it would open in desktop mode, showing a VR window on the desktop but not in the headset (headset just displayed the desktop with the VR window but not actual VR mode). Then I replaced my HD with an SSD to improve performance, and as part of that reinstalled oculus software which I realize in hindsight is where it all went wrong. Games worked fine, I would air link to my desktop and from there launch steam and then games from that. The longer version in case it helps with diagnosis: Tl dr: if you reinstall oculus software on your desktop, remove the paired headset and disable / re enable air link in your headset itself, and then re-pair with your desktop. I've been battling with this for two evenings now trying solutions others have suggested here and elsewhere and have finally solved it so I thought to post here in case anyone else is doing the same.
